Dufton Hall

A SHORT HISTORY OF DUFTON HALL

In 1335 the manor of Dufton was held by Ralph de Greystoke, it continued in this family until the line ended in a daughter called :-

Elizabeth de Greystoke who married Thomas Dacre, Lord Gilsland. In the third descent the line ended in daughters. Dufton Hall was inherited by:-

Anne, who married Philip Howard, Earl of Arundel. It remained in the Howard family for several generations, who then sold it to: -

John Winder of Lorton, who died in 1700, followed by his son William Winder, who died in 1776 leaving Dufton Hail to a relative: -

Edward Milward (note plaque over front door, date and initials, erected because of the new Window Tax Law). In 1785 he sold the Hail to: -

Sackville, the Eighth Earl of Thanet who died in 1786 and was succeeded by his son:

Sackville the Ninth Earl of Thanet. He died without issue. The title and deeds (Estates) passed to his next brother:-

Charles Tufton, Tenth Earl of Thanet,who never married & died in 1832 , his brother:-

Henry, the Eleventh Earl of Thanet succeeded to the title which became extinct on his death in 1849. The estates by will to:-

Richard Tufton, who became a Baronet in 1851, he died in 1871, his son :-

Henry James Tufton succeeded, the first Lord Hoffield, he died in 1926, his son:

John Sackville Richard Tufton succeeded, the second. Lord Hoffield, who died December 21st 1952 succeeded by his son :-

Henry Sackeille Thanet Tufton, the third Lord Hoffield ,who died August 20th, 1961, leaving the estates by will to:-

Marquis Hill, who sold Dufton Hall on July 19th, 1962 to:-

Corthorn Land and Timber Co. Ltd. They sold Dufton Hall to:- Alfred and Mary Howe, who then sold part to J Rudd.

Dufton Hall Farm was then inherited by:

Robinson David Howe who has lived here with his family since 1947.
